The Kabbalah of Writing: Pen, Pencil, Paper, and the Presence of God INTRODUCTION The Kabbalah is a highly sophisticated and complex series of spiritual teachings and practices passed down privately from rabbi to disciple for over 2000 years. Originally intended only for the most advanced students of Judaism, the Kabbalah has undergone a revolution in the past decades making it available to people with little or no understanding of Judaism. While advanced work in the Kabbalah is still reserved for a select few with the time and dedication to pursue it, a number of authentically Jewish yet universally accessible approaches to the Kabbalah have emerged. The Kabbalah of Writing is one of these. CONTENT and STYLE Using the written word and the scribbled line to access the deep wisdom of our souls, the Kabbalah of Writing focuses on a series of exercises adapted from the teachings and practices of the Kabbalah, and designed to open gateways into your innermost self. Each section of the program consists of five parts: An introduction grounding the exercise in the specific aspect of the Kabbalah from which it comes; instruction in the exercise; a period of meditation designed to move you into the right frame of mind to engage the exercise fully; doing the exercise itself; and processing the results of the exercise. This processing period is divided into three parts: private contemplation, sharing with a pre-assigned Kabbalah of Writing partner, and sharing with the group as a whole. Group sharing is purely voluntary. The Kabbalah of Writing is not a creative writing workshop, nor is it intended for people looking to improve their writing skills. We use writing and drawing solely as tools for self-discovery. The style of this workshop, therefore, is highly playful and informal, focusing on the clarity of what you discover not the literary quality with which you articulate it. GOALS The goals of The Kabbalah of Writing are three: 1. To learn some of the basic teachings of the Kabbalah as they relate to your life; 2. To learn a set of tools based on the Kabbalah that you can use for self exploration; and 3. To begin a life-long travelogue of your spiritual journey using these tools. Back to program descriptions |
